What is aadhaar number?
Aadhaar number is a unique 12-digit identification number issued by the Indian government to residents of India. It is the world’s largest biometric identification system and is considered to be a proof of identity and address in India.
The Aadhaar program was launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in 2009, with the aim of providing a unique identification number to every resident of India, including citizens and non-citizens. The Aadhaar number is linked to an individual’s biometric and demographic data, such as their name, date of birth, gender, address, and fingerprints, which are collected during the enrollment process.
The Aadhaar number is used to establish the identity of an individual for various purposes, including opening a bank account, obtaining a mobile phone connection, and receiving government subsidies and benefits. It can also be used as a digital signature and for e-KYC (Know Your Customer) verification.
It is important to note that while the Aadhaar number is widely used in India, it has also been the subject of controversy due to concerns over privacy and security of personal data. The Indian government has taken steps to address these concerns, including introducing new regulations and security measures to protect the data of Aadhaar cardholders.
